Frequently asked questions
Is kingcup native?
Yes, the kingcup is native to the Netherlands and other parts of Europe. It is mainly found in moist, wet areas such as along ditch banks, in swamps and marshy meadows. As the marsh marigold thrives in wet soils, it plays an important role in the ecosystem of these environments. The plant provides shelter and nectar to various species of insects and also helps stabilise wet banks. Outside Europe, the kingcup is also found in North America and parts of Asia.
What is the flowering time of kingcup?
The flowering season of the kingcup (Caltha palustris) usually falls between March and May, but in favourable conditions it can sometimes give a second bloom in summer. It blooms early in spring, often when most other plants are not yet in bloom, which makes its bright yellow flowers especially striking. The bright, buttercup-like flowers attract many pollinating insects, such as bees and butterflies. A true spring bloomer, the kingcup flower adds colour to marshy and wetland areas where other plants often flower later in the season.
What is the planting depth of kingcup?
The planting depth of Dotterflower is between 5 and 15 cm.
How fast does kingcup grow?
Dotterflower grows fairly quickly, especially when it is in a wet, moist environment that suits its natural habitat well. In early spring, the plant quickly begins to form new shoots and leaves, and it can expand through root shoots and seeds. Although it grows quickly, the plant does not aggressively take up a lot of space, making it good to combine with other water-loving plants in the garden. In moist conditions, the kingcup flower can also easily self-seed, keeping returning year after year.
How do I maintain kingcup?
Dandelion is a low-maintenance plant that does well in moist to wet soil or shallow water. The most important thing is to make sure the plant always has sufficient water, as it naturally grows in swampy environments. Dandelion can be in both sun and semi-shade, but flowers best in sunny spots. Remove dead flowers and leaves after flowering to keep the plant tidy and to increase the chances of a second flowering in summer. The plant does not need frequent pruning, but you can remove excess shoots and seedlings in spring or autumn to prevent it from taking up too much space. Additional watering may be necessary in prolonged drought.
