Planting oxygenated plants

Dutch Water Tech also carries out projects with oxygen plants, or submerged aquatic plants. We do this mainly for municipalities, water boards and the national government. We have carried out various projects for, among others, the municipality of Utrecht, Nissewaard, Rotterdam, Steenbergen, Bergen op Zoom and the State Property Agency.

Importance of the WFD objectives

With the Water Framework Directive (WFD) really on the horizon, it is important to push ahead with oxygen planting.

Planting in firm soil

If the situation allows, oxygen plants can be planted in the solid soil. This is possible if a temporary lowering of the water level can be achieved at the project site. The plants soon need to be at a depth of 40-50 cm, depending on the species, which makes planting by hand in deep water difficult.

Alternative planting methods in deep water

Fortunately, when the water is deeper, there are other options for planting oxygen plants. For example, we work with ready-made boxes.

Boxes with oxygen plants

A jute sheet is placed in a wooden box, into which the oxygen plants are inserted and covered with lava sludge. The system is fully biodegradable, while the lava sludge houses bacteria that provide nutrients for the plants. This system is suitable for a variety of species, such as Glossy pondweed, Sprawling pondweed, Earsweed, and many others.

Pest protection: Procrate

To prevent fish species such as carp from eating young plants, the boxes can be combined with the Procrate, a biodegradable biopolymer chew guard that protects the plants and promotes their development.

DWT-REEF: Additional habitat for fish

In addition, Dutch Water Tech offers the DWT-REEF system, iron cages filled with dead prunings that create a perfect habitat for fish and other marine life. Boxes with oxygen plants can be placed in the cages, keeping the plants safe from being eaten by large carp and allowing them to develop optimally.
