Narrow Waterweed

Narrow Waterweed

This oxygen plant is called Elodea Nuttallii in Latin. It is an aquatic plant that originally grows in North America. Sometime in the 19th century, this little plant came along to the Netherlands, where it feels perfectly at home. It is therefore found in many places in the Netherlands. It also causes problems. It grows extremely fast, sometimes completely clogging up shallow waterways. Pleasure boating then suffers greatly. The decision is then usually made to mow the ditches. The advantage is that this also removes many nutrients from the water.

Narrow Waterweed is no longer sold due to its invasive properties. In fact, it easily displaces native aquatic plants.

Narrow Waterweed Properties

  • Native plant, hardy
  • Does not make many demands on water quality
  • Good against algae
  • Becomes approximately 75 centimetres long
  • Likes to stand in the sun, but semi-shade will do as well.

Frequently asked questions

What does Narrow Waterweed look like?

This aquatic plant is very similar to the variant Broad Waterweed (Elodea Canandensis). However, Broad Waterweed has much thicker stems and more frilled leaves. The narrow variant has light green to brownish stems to which narrow leaves up to about 25 mm long are attached. In summer, it regularly forms small white flowers.

How should I plant Narrow Waterweed?

Planting Narrow Waterweed is not necessarily necessary. It can draw nutrients directly from the water column. If planted, however, roots are created. In the pond, this is often a better plan; loose plants give a messy appearance. Planting in a pond basket offers a solution. The exuberant growth can also be kept somewhat in check this way. Note that this species may no longer be sold.
