TL;DR | Needlewater rush (Eleocharis acicularis) is an evergreen oxygen plant suitable for various pond zones, from swamp to submerged in deeper areas. The plant stays low, grows compactly and requires little maintenance. With its air-forming action and dense root network, this plant helps keep water clear and a stable ecosystem. Few pond plants are as widely applicable as Needlewater rush, thanks to its adaptability to different depths and conditions. This grass-like species from the cypergrass family (Cyperaceae) adapts effortlessly to different conditions. You will find it both on wet banks and submerged in pond water. It stands out for its fine, needle-like stems and its ability to stay green even in winter.
With its compact growth and tranquil appearance, Conifer water rushes are a natural addition to ponds that need to remain clear and healthy. Thanks to its gradual oxygenation and the structure it provides underwater, it is loved by pond lovers and aquatic life alike.

This plant feels at home in sun or semi-shade. This species comes into its own at the water's edge, but also does well as a submerged plant. This makes it suitable for use in riparian zones, on marshy edges, in helophyte filters and even as a submerged oxygen plant in the deeper part of the pond.
The plant tolerates a wide range of depths, from a few centimetres to as much as 40 centimetres underwater. In ponds with varying water levels, such as natural ponds or polder ditches, Coniferous watermilfoil holds its own calmly.
As an oxygen plant, Needlewater rush contributes to water quality. During the day, it produces oxygen, which is essential for the biological balance in the pond. At the same time, it absorbs nutrients from the water and soil, which helps to prevent algae formation.
In addition, with its fine root structure, it provides a safe habitat for small pond animals such as larvae, water fleas and snails.
Coniferous water rushes grow from a network of underground rhizomes. The plant forms a dense sod of fine, grass-like stems. Thanks to this growth habit, it spreads slowly but steadily without becoming rampant.
It is a strong plant that remains visible even in winter. Unlike many other pond plants, Needlewaterbrush retains its green colour in the cold months, creating a lively look in the winter pond.
There is no pruning or extra feeding: maintenance is minimal. If the clump gets too big, it can easily be split into smaller pieces, after which it quickly regrows.
When fully submerged, this plant actively contributes to oxygenation of the pond water. This is especially valuable in ponds where clear water is desired without chemicals or filters.
For a healthy balance in the pond, five plants per 1,000 litres of water are usually sufficient. This maintains oxygen levels and reduces algae growth.
Needlewater rush combines very well with oxygen plants such as glossy pondweed, hornwort and fenroot.
