Bladderwort

Bladderwort | Carnivorous Aquatic Plant for the Pond

Bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris) is a unique aquatic plant with a special place in our native flora. This floating species occurs naturally in Dutch waters and stands out because of its yellow blooms and special way of feeding itself. Instead of via roots that are missing, this plant gets its nutrition from the water as well as from small animals it catches. Order easily via our partner: Ordering bladderwort at Vijvermeester

What is Bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris)?

Utricularia vulgaris is part of the bladderwort family (Lentibulariaceae) and is adapted to nutrient-poor, clear ponds. The plant floats just below the water surface, without roots, and has finely branched stems with small vesicles. These vesicles act as traps: when touched by a prey animal, a valve opens and the animal is sucked in using negative pressure.

In the summer months, yellow flowers appear, rising above the surface of the water. These are usually pollinated by sturdy insects such as bumblebees and bees.

Several varieties exist within this plant group, such as Loos or Small bladderwort. However, the best-known species for ponds is Utricularia vulgaris, often referred to as Large Bladderwort.

Properties of Greater Bladderwort

  • Type of plant: Free-floating floating plant
  • Light requirements: Sun to partial shade
  • Bloom: Yellow flowers from June to September
  • Length: Becomes up to 2 metres long.
  • Water depth: Suitable for 20 - 60 cm deep water
  • Hardiness: Yes, via winter buds (turions)
  • Roots: Not present

At the end of the growing season, the plant produces so-called turions: compact buds that sink to the bottom to survive the winter. Once the temperature rises in spring, these buds develop again into new plants.

Bladderwort in the Pond

This floating plant is a good addition for ponds that already have a stable ecosystem. It does not actively help in oxygen production or algae control, but does not disrupt pond life either. Its greatest assets are its unique appearance, carnivorous function and the fact that it requires hardly any maintenance.
