What is Potamogeton Lucens?
Potamogeton Lucens or Glossy pondweed is a favourite for many people with a pond. This is mainly because it is an excellent oxygen plant that grows quickly. Because these pond plants absorb nutrients from the water and give algae a smaller chance to develop, they are great for making the water clearer. This is because floating algae have less food available.
However, this is not the only characteristic of this pondweed species. Glossy Pondweed is capable of secreting a substance into the water that reduces the algae's ability to develop. This is better known as allelopathic ability or allelopathy. Besides these properties, which are of course very useful in a pond, they are also beautiful plants that would not look out of place in your pond.

Frequently asked questions
What is the origin of Potamogeton Lucens and what does it look like?
Glossy, or Glossy pondweed is native to Europe, western/central Asia and northwest Africa. In the Netherlands, it used to be fairly common, but is now only moderately observed. The main reason for this is the declining water quality of surface waters.
This aquatic plant can reach a length between 60 and 200 cm. The leaves of this pond plant are green to brown translucent and can reach a length between 10 and 25 cm and a width of 1 to 5 cm. They are therefore fairly large leaves. They are often very ornamental in your pond. The brownish colour is mainly noticeable in spring, in summer this aquatic plant has more green leaves. This is a rooting aquatic plant.
