Hottonia palustris

What is Hottonia Palustris?

Hottonia Palustris, Dutch name Waterviolier, is a beautiful pond plant. Both under and above water, it gives a beautiful effect to your pond in all seasons. Around May/June, beautiful white to lilac yellow flowers appear, which will give a colourful effect to your pond and garden. Even in winter, this oxygen plant has a beautiful green colour. This pond plant will therefore still produce oxygen for your pond and pond animals. Like Ranunculus Aquatilis (Water Ranunculus), this plant provides a nice place for fish and other animals in your pond. With its thick, packed stems and large leaves, this aquatic plant serves as a good hiding place.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Hottonia Palustris come from?

Water viola is native to all parts of Europe. It is an aquatic plant that can therefore survive our winters without any problems.

In the wild, this plant grows in shallower, calcium-poor water. If the water flows slightly, this is not a problem for this oxygen plant. In fact, the release of oxygen is even better than in normal stagnant water. A point of attention necessary for this aquatic plant species is that the water is not too acidic. Otherwise, the plant will become slimy and some of the branches will eventually break off.

How many Hottonia Palustris should I put in my pond?

We always recommend 4 to 5 bunches oxygen plants per 1,000 litres of water. Even though it seems like a lot, it gives the best and cleanest results. Since there are enough oxygen plants to draw nutrients from the pond, the chances of algae will become minimal.
