Callitriche Platycarpa

What is Callitriche Platycarpa?

Callitriche Platycarpa, Sterrenkroos in Dutch, is an ideal plant if you have a pond that catches a lot of sunlight. The floating leaves of this oxygen plant provide the water with shade. The green leaves under water also produce essential oxygen. In addition, this is a fast-growing oxygen plant. This ensures that it needs a lot of nutrients to keep growing. The floating leaves of Callitriche Platycarpa will cover part of the pond and provide shade. Therefore, less sun enters the pond and the water warms up less quickly.

Both of these properties are useful for competing with the algae living in your pond. This is because algae need the same nutrients as Callitriche Platycarpa to grow. Algae also need light. With less light entering the water, algae have less chance. So besides being a beautiful plant for your pond, Callitriche Platycarpa is also a useful plant! This pond plant occurs in the wild in the Netherlands, in standing and flowing water.

Does Callitriche Platycarpa flower?

Do not expect this oxygen plant to flower, or that it is clearly visible that it is flowering. This is because Callitriche Platycarpa rarely blooms in the Netherlands. You won't really notice if the pond plant does flower, because the flowers are just as green as the leaves. If you do want a visibly flowering species, we recommend Ranunculus aquatilis (Water Ranunculus) and Hottonia palustris (Water Violier).

Callitriche Platycarpa should be planted in a pond basket as it is a rooting aquatic plant. Not sure how you should plant this pond plant? We have a page for that. Click here to be redirected to the page.

How many oxygen plants should I buy for my pond?

For oxygen plants we recommend putting 4 to 5 bunches into your pond per 1,000 litres of water. If you do this, you will have the greatest chance of good oxygen production and algae prevention, and, not unimportantly, your pond will become or remain beautifully clear. Of course, you can always add different types of oxygen plants together.
