Pikeweed. A beautiful sea of flowers in your pond!
Pikeweed is a fun riparian plant that creates a lovely atmosphere in your pond with its pretty purple/blue flowers. The Latin name of this marsh plant is Pontederia Cordata. This species is native to the marshes of North America but is now found in many places in the Netherlands. It is now considered by many to be a native plant. This marsh plant can therefore withstand our winters just fine and will quickly reappear in spring.
Some parts of this marsh plant are even edible for humans.

Frequently asked questions
What is the flowering time of pikeweed?
Pikeweed continues to grow until late in the season, keeping your pond looking beautiful in autumn. When the beautiful flowers of this marsh plant have finished flowering, the stems will remain. The seeds from the stems end up in the water, ensuring a beautiful carpet of flowers the following year.
What is the planting depth of pikeweed?
Pikeweed does best at a planting depth of 10 to 30 cm underwater, with the roots firmly anchored in the muddy soil. It is suitable for shallow pond edges or marsh zones. Make sure the crown of the plant is just below the water surface. If the water is deeper, the plant may struggle to grow properly.
How fast does pikeweed grow and how tall can this plant grow?
Even without flowers, this marsh plant makes for a pretty sight in the pond. The bright green leaves rise about ten centimetres above the water surface and are an attractive sight. This riparian plant can grow 50 to 80 cm high and is best placed in sun/semi-shade.
Pikeweed grows rapidly in the pond by creating rhizomes that crawl across the bottom. The leaves are long and heart-shaped and can grow up to 25 cm. The buds/flowers are blue/purple in colour.
How should I plant pikeweed?
This marsh plant needs a substrate. Usually, this pond plant is placed in a basket with some soil. However, it grows very quickly, so the basket will soon be overgrown. This is where you plant the aquatic plants, after which the basket will break down over the years.
How should I maintain pikeweed?
Pikeweed is relatively low-maintenance. Make sure it is in a constant, moist environment, such as the edge of a pond or in shallow water. Remove dead leaves and stems in spring and autumn to keep the plant healthy. If the plant gets too big, you can split it in spring and replant it. Also keep nearby weeds under control so that pikeweeds have enough room to grow.
Is pikeweed hardy?
This bog plant is hardy. However, it is never wrong to give this plant some extra attention when it gets colder. For example, when the plant has finished flowering, it can be placed a little deeper in the water so that it does not freeze too quickly. This way, it can easily survive the winter.
